Digest #62 - Best of 2023!

The year is already coming to a close. Before it officially ends, we wanted to thank you all again for your support - the read.cv community is truly the gift that keeps on giving!

To wrap up things up, our team wanted to continue our tradition of taking a look back at our favourite projects. It took a while, but we all eventually narrowed down our lengthy lists to share our top three picks for 2023..

Andy’s amazing assortment

Broke 100 in golf recently (and is giving us another record-setting breakdown before the year is over!)

NTS to Spotify
“Anyone who has spent any time with me at the office knows that I am a staunch NTS loyalist. That made this simple utility to turn NTS episodes into Spotify playlists by Pedro Brandao an easy pick for me.”

Shadergradient
“Shadergradient is a tool by Seungmee Lee and Yongmin Ruucm to create moving gradients in Figma, Framer, or React. I love the execution of this project—it’s conceptually so simple but goes so far above and beyond expectations. Spoiler alert, the gradients are all rendered in 3D.”

everything.can.be.scanned (e.c.b.s)
“I am admittedly a huge sucker for this type of project—it reminds me of old Tumblr blogs like Scanwiches. Zen out and enjoy hundreds of objects meticulously documented by Daniil Kurguzov and don’t miss out on their instagram account.”

Mehdi’s meticulous mix

Really got in his wheelhouse this year (and is still kiln it with these fiery choices!)

Tone
“Like most of us, I spend all day at a desk in front of a computer but dream about spending my time outside: on a hike in a forest, bustling through a city center, or just on a nice drive. I feel like Matthias' project captures the beauty that I find outdoors and amazingly, lets me bring it to my digital life.”

Every Element Is an HTML
Katherine's project is on its face, incredibly simple but I think with its playful nature, it illustrates three important tenets of the web:

  • the browser must display whatever HTML you throw at it, regardless of whether its valid or not
  • the web is open, the building blocks are known, and you can look behind the curtains instantly
  • websites are an interactive medium and they should be fun“

The Forest
“I feel like Manu and Carl crafted the perfect metaphor here. The internet does feel like a sterile big box store and maybe that's good for checking my email but sometimes I want to venture into uncharted waters. When you go for a walk in their forest, sometimes you find a beehive, sometimes a fallen log, and sometimes a picnic table.”

Shen’s super selection

Frequented the NYT Connections Companion comments section (but had the most difficulty puzzling over this year's picks!)

A Walking Poem
“Will forever be in debt to Javier Arce for helping me discover the perfect route between my two favourite grocery stores. Friendship ended with Google Maps. Now psychogeographical poetry is my best friend."

The HTML Review
Maxwell Neely-Cohen and Shelby Wilson never miss the <mark>! The way they’re able to consistently capture the thoughtful hidden pulse of the Internet I love.. permanently burned into my mind. It probably won’t be long before some elements burn into my screen, as well..”

Super Patience

“Turns out that I am a Sucker For Solitaire. Something about the fact that the game takes control of your pointer and replaces it with a cheeky little cursor feels very deliberate.. there is no escaping who I am. And Stephen Niedzielski is praying on my downfall.”
